Telly and his dolly
So, I’ve been putting off blogging because I promised a big post about my San Francisco trip, and for some reason that seems like a lot of work. As time wore on, I felt it was embarrassingly late to post about month-old adventures, but then Miss Renee did it, and it was just fine. Point is, I will get to the SF post when I feel like it, which is definitely not now.
Right now I feel like blogging about a subject that is, as many of you know, near and dear to my heart: Sesame Street. In my humble opinion, Sesame Street is the best television program ever made. It’s educational, it’s funny, it’s timeless, it’s commercial-free, and it invented PC only to have others blow the concept wholly out of proportion.
I grew up watching Sesame Street—as Mary Ess will tell you, when I was three I simply referred to the show as “The Favorite.” At five, I won a Sesame Street coloring contest sponsored by JC Penney; my prize was a new wardrobe of awesome Sesame Street duds. As a teenager, I preferred to spend any sick days lying on the couch, sipping Sprite and watching Sesame Street rather than Ricki Lake or soaps or other daytime fare. When I was in college and worked at KBYU Master Control, I always volunteered for the early Monday shift (12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.), because that’s when we aired all five of the previous week’s Sesame Street episodes back to back.
I’ve got Sesame Street on the mind because the other day I saw a news blurb on Sesame Street Old School Vol. 2, which is a “best of” from 1974-1979. I’m only slightly embarrassed to say that’s almost the exact timeframe in which I watched it the most. This got me thinking about my own favorite Sesame Street sketches, which are as follows (the ones with the asterisk [*] are not necessarily “old school” but I still love them).
1. Me and My Llama
2. My Name is Fred
3. "A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter"
4. The Triangle Song (by Telly, not the one with James Blunt, though)*
5. “Ten! Root Beer! Floats!”
6. The Ladybugs’ Picnic
7. Lost Dog Flyer
8. Anytime Bert’s opining about his bottle cap collection
9. That one time where Elmo learned to brush his teeth only, having no teeth, he used an ear of corn*
10. Monsterpiece Theater
Sure, Elmo, Ernie and Oscar are great, but a bit overdone don’t you think? Here are my personal favorite Sesame Street characters:
1. Telly (the self-conscious one)
2. Baby Bear* (the worry-wart)
3. Telly & Baby Bear in any scene together (hi-larious)
4. Slimey
5. The Yip Yips
6. Prairie Dawn
7. Those conjoined monsters that sound out words by bringing them together
8. The Count (actual eastern European royalty, or mere Rocky Horror fan roaming the neighborhood—you be the judge)
9. That adorable talking loaf of bread in the fridge full of talking food
10.LeVar Burton (okay, so he wasn’t on Sesame Street–but he should have been!)

Me and My Llama would be on my top 10 too. My kids actually don't like SS, so I don't ever watch it, also it's on at a weird time. I know - that's not what I should be posting, but it's true. I really love Grover in any form.
Hubs & I make obscure SS references to each other all the time. In his family they said, "A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a cinco bunnick." So that's what we always say. Like, nearly every time we discuss grocery shopping.
"Pear is pera, and apple is manzaaaana..."
"Ten! Chocolate cream! Pies!!!"

Nearly every Ernie & Bert scene in their apartment; like if Bert's trying to sleep and Ernie's playing the drums, inviting in sundry jungle animals, etc.
When Mr. Hooper died in 1982 (just looked it up on Wikipedia), it was a major event in our family. I also seem to recall my mom taping other future episodes of major importance (marriages, babies, etc.) for us to watch when we got home from school. Many years later I was paying attention when they switched the Miles actor w/o explanation; the new one is not nearly as cute! Although I suppose neither are there anymore...
Unfortunately my kids haven't watched it too much either, although that's what I was doing on Sept. 11, 2001.. watching Sesame Street with my toddler Noah... when Aaron called me from Austin to tell me to switch over to the news.
Good grief, I do apologize for the excessive length...
i do love sesame street with all of my heart, but my memory doesn't serve me well...
plus, i almost exclusively watched mtv as a child. i was way ahead of my time.
I will forever have this picture in my mind of you sitting on your (plastic) "horsie" with your face about a foot from the TV ... absolutely mesmerized by SS.
And let's not forget that you were between a year and a year and a half in those memories.
And I personally want to take my llama to the dentist, but that's just me.

anywho! i was a total SS lover. although, outside of the main characters, i really don't remember who i liked best. but i remember favoring the count!... 1, ha ha ha, 2, ha ha ha... hahah! still cracks me up! lol
Even though not a regular in the sense of the ones you mention, Kermit the Frog and his Seasame Street News Flash segments. Even if over publized and overused, Kermit will always be my favorite. And, for family impact (or, given his size, impact generally) Snuffleupagus.
i could always relate to the cookie monster, you know, an emotional over eater.
Oh Ginny...thank you!! SS was among my favorite shows as a kid as well. I remember having to start going to preschool and being insensed that I would have to miss my beloved show. To my delight we were able to watch it there on ocassion. You have listed off many of my favorites...I'd have to say the one that comes to mind most often is "a loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butta." I think of it almost any time I have to remember a list of things. I'm also with p-daddy, in that I loved Snuffleupagus. I also really appreciated the conjoined monster twins who spelled out words...I still do that in my head too and always picture them. Grover was great...particularly when he ate out, as he was prone to having flies in his soup (or was he the waiter??). At any rate, thank you thank you thank you for starting my morning out so great with these fond childhood memories!!
ahh, the kbyu sunday/monday overnighter...best shift ever (of course, it's not tough to beat "world at war" concentration camp footage or the fat-handed instruction of uvsc telecourse math). speaking of overnighters--i remember crying almost every night i worked one. i'm not sure if it was the cold or the exhaustion or the heightened 3am emotional state or the aforementioned concentration camp footage, but did that happen to you?
one glorious semester i got to follow the progress of slimey as he entered the space program. i remember watching with baited breath as he took his first historic squirms on the moon.

Whenever I see a contrast in color that I like, "opposites" tune POPS into my head and I can't get it out!!! I love that show. Love you too by the way and hope that you are doing well.

My kids love Manah Manah (I'm sure I'm not spelling that correctly). It's super fun to find old clips on YouTube. My childhood fave was on your list... the lost dog flyer. I LOVED that printing press and even got a kid-sized version when I was little. And I had a recurring dream about it too.
Sad for me.. Q has no SS memories. I have no one to have these inside jokes with.
